Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: Assessing the Nature of Innovation in These Fields

Michael D. Mehta

University of Saskatchewan

Sociologists of science and others have long beeninterested in how advances in science come about, andtheir potential social and economic impacts. Developmentsin nanoscience and nanotechnology will providesocial scientists with a unique opportunity to explorehow scientific activities form de novo.Additionally, scientists will have the opportunity to examinethe factors that drive science and technology incertain directions by considering how different modelsof innovation may explain how the topography of theknowledge-based economy is being shaped by radicallynew approaches to science.
